5 Office Wardrobe Essentials You Must Have
Don’t know what to wear to work every morning? Don’t feel like spending a fortune on work attire? These are the troubles that I often face as an office lady. Hence, I’ve come up with five wardrobe must-haves for an OL to help you build up your work wear. The key to these five pieces is versatility, so you can get more bang for your buck. They are also basic items that are great building blocks for outfits of all styles! 😀
1. Little Black Dress
Yes, everyone should own a little black dress, otherwise adoringly known as the LBD. It takes time to search for the perfect LBD, so start now! Find one that would accentuate your curves, and is of the right length and material. It should also be a simple piece with no crazy adornments, as you can always spice it up with accessories to create different styles later on.
In the day, wear your LBD with a blazer and you will look sleek and smart to rock that important presentation. In the evening, dress it down with a statement necklace and party away!
2. Crisp White Shirt
This should be a plain button-up collared shirt. The material should ideally be crease free. It should also be worn fitted and flattering for your body shape.
There are so many ways you can work around a white shirt! You can wear it on its own, add on a jacket for that touch of classiness, wear it under a sweater for a preppy look, or tucked out with jeans for a more laid back style. It’s really all up to your creativity!
3. Black Pencil Skirt
A black pencil skirt is a staple in your wardrobe that would bring you through from day to night. Get one of a moderate length (not a mini skirt), and avoid thigh high slits. You want to look smart, not sleazy! The skirt should be fitted but not suffocatingly tight. After all, you would want to be able to sit in it comfortably for a whole day at work. A pencil skirt made of a stretchy material would definitely be easier to move around in.
Choosing the right pencil skirt that compliments your body shape is the key to making you look slender. Wear it with a top tucked in to elongate your legs, or keep your top untucked for a more relaxed look. Before I forget, do get some seamless underwear to go with your pencil skirt! You wouldn’t want to get caught with VPL (visible panty line) right? 🙂
4. Fitted Black Blazer
If you think blazers can only be worn on formal occasions, then you are truly mistaken! It is actually a versatile piece that works equally well for casual outfits. Pair it with a plain tee and jeans for a smart casual look. Throwing on a blazer in the office can help you fight the freezing air conditioning too!
A good blazer should be lined. It should also sit on you nicely, especially at the shoulders and waist. Avoid those with huge shoulder pads that make you look trashy.
5. Classy Nude Pumps
I vote for nude pumps instead of the usual black. Haven’t you heard? Nude is the new Black! Nude works just as well, if not, even better. A pair of nude shoes go with everything. What’s more, they elongate your legs!
There are many hues of nude (think 50 shades of grey?), so take your time to try out different shades and see which fits your skin tone the best. In addition, buy your pumps in a height you are comfortable in. I feel that it’s pointless struggling to walk in a pair of sexy 4 inch stilettos and end up stumbling in them, no? 😉
A Few Pointers
As a rule of thumb, black is easy to match, even with prints. Otherwise, neutral colours such as white, beige, khaki, and grey work well too. If you are building up your wardrobe, consider getting the basic items in neutral colours first before you start buying brighter colours and crazy prints which may be challenging to match. When shopping for your wardrobe essentials, they should be apparel you can imagine yourself wearing even a few years down the road. In other words, they should be items that would never go out of fashion!
P.S. If you’ve noticed, the photos above feature Miranda Kerr. I admire her sense of fashion and dressing as she always looks smart, even when dressing down or bringing her son out for a walk in the park. I also feel that she is able to pull off multiple looks and styles, from being a sexy Victoria’s Secret Angel to being the face of high street brand Mango and fast fashion retailer H&M – she does it all well! If you are looking for a place to start filling up your wardrobe, do it with Mango online at ZALORA Singapore now.
