IPL Review – Fave Prestige

I have been undergoing IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments for several areas and would like to share my experiences. To me, IPL is a saviour as it is a semi-permanent hair removal method. Shaving and epilating hurt the skin and having to do it repeatedly every week is not good for the skin at all. Plus, they cause ingrown hair! I needed a more long term solution to my hair woes, and IPL seemed like the way to go.

You can read my leg IPL with Datsumo Labo and Brazilian IPL with Elegance The Beauty Retreat experiences too.

Fave Prestige

I came across the underarm IPL promotion Fave Prestige was having on Groupon and decided to give it a try. I’ve read of horror stories whereby customers who bought vouchers were being hard sell packages or given sloppy service.ย There wasn’t any review on Fave Prestige back then, so basically I was just trying my luck. I had my reservations, but I wouldn’t know if I didn’t try isn’t it?

The Place

Fave Prestige is mainly a nail salon with one row of sofa seats lined against the wall. The IPL treatment room is located at the back.

Fave Prestige Treatment Bed

IPL treatments are done in a simple white room with the bed tucked neatly in a corner. Honestly speaking, I don’t think the towels are changed after each guest. But since I just lay there for at most 15 minutes, I don’t have an issue with this.

The Underarm IPL Treatment

Fave Prestige Intense Pulsed Light Machine

This is the IPL machine used at Fave Prestige. Looks pretty harmless?

Fave Prestige Tube Robe

Here’s how it goes. If you’re wearing sleeved clothing, you’ll have to change into a tube robe as shown in image above. Lie down on the bed and the beautician will shave your underarms. A cooling gel will then be applied on your underarms. You’ll be asked to put on safety glasses to protect your eyes from the strong rays of light. Your underarms will be zapped both horizontally and vertically to ensure they are thoroughly covered. After which, the cooling gel will be wiped away and you’re done! This takes at most 15 minutes.

My Underarm IPL Review

For me, the pain was definitely bearable and I would rate it 2/10. I’ve been through Brazilian waxing, so this is nothing much in comparison! Even though the strength of the IPL will be increased for each session, the pain reduces drastically as you undergo more treatments. I’ve completed my 12 treatments now and I no longer feel any pain. I experience only a slight burning smell because the IPL machine is put at its strongest but please don’t worry, my skin is not burnt!

Up till now, my underarms are more or less clear, with just a few stubborn strands which are still “surviving”. Now that I don’t pluck the underarm hair anymore, I also notice that my underarms are fairer as the skin is not injured from the plucking. So if you are troubled by dark underarms, you may want to consider IPL!

In addition, if you have the habit of using deodorant, I would also strongly recommend you to exfoliate your underarms twice weekly with a body scrub to ensure it is thoroughly cleansed. This is key to having fair underarms so you won’t have to feel so self conscious when wearing sleeveless clothes!

The beautician serving me is Kandy and she’s friendly. I have no problem booking appointment on a monthly basis. Fave Prestige will also call one day before your appointment to remind you and confirm the booking.

I paid $88 for 12 sessions of underarm hair removal; one session per month. I think it’s a really good deal! Thankfully, I decided to give Fave Prestige a try!

hello, happened to see your blog on underarm ipl. i went to supreme Q.X for ipl underarm and only on the 8th ipl, the boss tell me i should shave my armpit. but the staff told me to shave 2-3 days beofr ethe ipl on my 1st ipl. so just wanted to ask if you shave your underarm before your ipl? thanks

    • Hi Lee! When I went for underarm IPL at Fave Prestige, the beautician shaved for me right before I did the IPL. When I went for leg hair removal at Datsumo Labo, I was told to shave 2-3 days before the IPL.

Sometimes they need the hair to be of a certain length when you do the IPL, so you can let the boss know that you did shave 2-3 days before and see what she says. Hope this helps! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi, do you think IPL suitable for a 14yrs old girl?

    • Hi, yes I think 14 may be too young to start on IPL. I guess it will be better to wait till puberty is over, then go for IPL to remove body hair once and for all. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Hi Cheryl, it is effective in removing hair but also depends on your skin. For hair that has been removed, it will not grow anymore.
